One of the most inspiring times in the year is the period of time when all design schools present their students’ work. On June 22nd The Municipal Academy of Sint-Niklaas, Belgium had its annual presentation. Two fourth grade students graduated with a wonderfull collection.
Astrid Hoens – ‘Heart of gold’
Astrid Hoens has based her graduation collection on the colours, the textures and the appearances of birds, fish and butterflies mixed with the favourite colours of her family. The golden lining is a reference to hear own ‘heart of gold’, such as referred to by her friends. Astrid’s shoes are playfull and colourfull, footwear worthy the princess she always wanted to be.
Alice van Opstal – Anatomy and x-ray’s
Alice van Opstal has had an interesting starting point to develop her graduation collection. She has a fascination for anatomy and x-ray’s, themes she combined with a colour palet which she destracted from Nicolaes Tulp’s famous painting The Anatomy Lesson (1632). She used vegetable tanned leather and a opanka technique to form the footbed, which she combined with beech wood heels. The result is an intreaguing footwear collection with a sinister appearance.
Marjolijn van Agt – Sleep Paralysis
Although not yet graduating, also Dutch student Marjolijn van Agt deserves to be mentioned here. At first sight her collection looks light and cheerful. But that’s just an optical illussion while her footwear has been inspired by the sleep paralysis Marjolijn has been suffering from since 5 years. Once the spectator is aware of this inspiration, he will be aware of all straps that will keep the shoes tight up the leg: the same feeling their creator feels while asleep but at the same time wide awake.
